Breve Reseña histórica

Padre José María Forgacs

l P. Forgacs nació en Checoslovaquia.

Outstanding Salesian fathers

Historical Résumé

Father José María Forgacs

Father Forgacs was born in Czechoslovakia.

Being very young when he felt called to be a Salesian, he went to Italy, where he entered the Foglizo Seminary. He reached Punta Arenas in 1924 as a missionary.

He was ordained as a priest in 1931, and started to take classes and look after youngsters in the Oratorio Festivo.

He was enthusiastic about football, and organised competitions for the children.

Padre Juan Tico

There he continued to be enthusiastic about football. He formed four teams – San Lorenzo, River, Boca and Racing. But as he was a fanatical follower of San Lorenzo, when selecting the teams, he always put the best players in San Lorenzo. Thus San Lorenzo were always champions.

He was such an enthusiast for San Lorenzo that he established the Club de San Lorenzo in Río Gallegos, which still exists. For this reason his coffin carries a plate from San Lorenzo Club of Río Gallegos.

At the end of 1935, he became one of the staff at the Salesian College at Puerto Santa Cruz.

He continued with the same enthusiasm for youth football. He gave the teams the same names as in Río Gallegos – San Lorenzo, River, Boca and Racing. Naturally the champions were San Lorenzo.

He was two years in Puerto Santa Cruz, then four years in Puerto Deseado, where his enthusiasm for football continued and grew. Naturally, the champions of the youth teams was San Lorenzo.

In Puerto Deseado he established the San Lorenzo Club, still going strong. He became an official match referee. Without removing his cassock, he ran with his whistle, drawing attention to himself by his energy and decisiveness.

In 1942 he was appointed rector of the Collegio de San Julían. Even though he was rector, he was with the children, refereeing the matches among San Lorenzo, River, Boca and Racing.

Whoever watched the match, knew who would be champions. Also in San Julían he established the Club San Lorenzo.

In 1949, he was appointed rector of the Collegio San José in Puerto Deseado and in 1952 went to Ushuaia to the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Our Lady of Mercy).

He moved to the Salesian Mission in Río Grande in 1954 and was there attached to the town‘s parish church.

Father Forgacs was the apostolate (priest engaged in outreach), encouraging sport. He encouraged and favoured motorcycling.

He was in San Julían for the third time for three years, before returning to Río Grande in 1964.

Father Forgacs was much loved everywhere.

Because of illness he travelled to Buenos Aires for treatment. There he died on 14 September 1966 at the age of 66.

His life was dedicated to the good of his neighbour.

The families of Río Grande petitioned that his remains be laid to rest in the Tomb of the Cross in the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Mission.

 Father Juan Tico.

Father / Brother Pedro Rossi, Curate

He was at the Salesian Mission in Río Grande from 1931 until his death on 25 September 1939 at the age of 82. He is buried in the cemetery of the Salesian Mission.

He was born in Belluno, Italy.

From the chronicles of the Salesian mission, book 19 (January 1939 to December 1940):– "Today, at three in the afternoon, the Pedro Antonio Rossi Curate died." He was downcast for the first fifteen days of the month. On the fifteenth, he got up for Mass, went to the bake house to warm himself up. On getting up he lost his sight and, alarmed, they took him back to bed. He didn‘t get up again. He spent the next seven days taking only liquids and half sleep. Then he died groaning and moaning. His last moments were attended by Father Hesse. All the brothers and children prayed for him. Thus ended his mortal toil.
